halloween
Making a kasha, or komori
A bowl incense burner that uses powdered incense, makko(抹香), on a bed of ash
As a base to burn aloeswood chips

Dipping a stick of incense into the pewter bowl
To ignite the powder
The glow of the stick catches my attention completely
And I'm absorbed in it

The world in a heap
of burning wood chips - the glow
of the incense stick

That is so true, so beautiful.

I'm a Buddhist priest living in Japan. Also a muralist and calligrapher, as well as essayist.

I was the first non-Japanese to be given Dharma Transmission in the Omuro School of Shingon Buddhism.

Became a Shikoku Pilgrimage Temple Association Sendatsu (Pilgrim Guide) in December of 2006.
